Overview

When Queen Victoria first visited Balmoral, Aberdeenshire, on 8 September 1848, she noted that the house was ‘small but pretty’, and while there “All seemed to breathe freedom and peace, and to make one forget the world and its sad turmoils”

Today visitors go to Balmoral for those very same reasons.

A place of peace, calm and tranquility, there really is no better place to escape the rush of modern day life.

Balmoral is a large estate house in Royal Deeside and is owned by King Charles III

Balmoral has been one of the residences of the British Royal family since 1852, although Balmoral remains private property of the King and is not part of the Crown Estate.

The castle is an example of Scottish baronial architecture.

The Balmoral Estate has been added to by successive members of The Royal Family, and now covers an area of approximately 50,000 acres (20,000 ha).

It is a working estate, including grouse moors, forestry, and farmland, as well as managed herds of deer, Highland cattle and ponies.

Well known for it’s impressive front lawn, you may find laid in the ground a stone that marks the position of the front door of the earlier house, demolished in 1856.

The formal gardens and vegetable garden include a range of Victorian glasshouses and the conservatory, along with a water garden feature.

"My partner and I really enjoyed the walk around the grounds and looking in the ballroom at Balmoral. The gentleman on the desk at the entrance was very friendly and welcoming. We were surprised to even be able to look around the private residence of the royal family, a nice day out. Audio tour was very good and informative."
